| Abstract: | Brain tumor segmentation is a fundamental task in medical image analysis, enabling accurate diagnosis, treatment planning and disease monitoring. Despite recent advances in deep learning, most high performing segmentation models rely heavily on dense pixel level annotations which remain costly and difficult to obtain in clinical practice. This limitation has driven increasing interest in weakly supervised learning approaches that aim to reduce annotation requirements while maintaining reliable localization performance. This master thesis presents a comprehensive literature review of weakly supervised methods applied to brain tumor segmentation. The study systematically analyzes recent advances in learning strategies designed to operate under limited supervision and examines how these approaches address key challenges such as tumor localization, spatial consistency and feature representation. Particular attention is given to the ability of existing methods to generalize across different MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) modalities and tumor variations. Furthermore, this work compares the main methodological trends in annotation efficient segmentation frameworks and highlights their strengths and limitations. The review also synthesizes the principal challenges that remain unresolved in weakly supervised medical image segmentation. |
